![]() Stay away from refined sugary foods. Don't eat snack foods - they're notorious for that. They literally kill the teeth because not only do they pump loads of sugar into your mouth but they cause major problems to the body when metabolised. If you eat lots of carbs (starchy foods: potatos/noodles/bread/rice/oatmeal/chips/cereal/grains/etc), those are almost just as bad after a few hours of fermenting. Bottom line, brush your teeth after every meal and/or gargle with baking soda + salt for a few minutes. Even trace amounts of sugars will harm the teeth. You gotta make it a habit to brush or at least wash out the mouth after you eat carb-ish foods.
(warning: i've read that brushing immediatley after eating sugar-rich foods actually harms them. so i humbly suggest that you gargle instead with some salt water. brush them after about 45 minutes. why is this so? if i recall right the reason is that the enamel is vulnerable to brushing temporarily.) Make sure you have a balanced diet. (i know it ain't cheap) Get a low-dose multi-vitamin (supply like 30% of DV). Reason I suggest low dose is that there're various connectiosn that suggest high doses (ex: 100% DV) are not good. It all boils down to a balanced diet and eating enough to get full nutrition. Look at the DASH diet for a balanced diet. In popular polls among professionals, it's near the top. You need to get on a dental plan. Dentists really can save your life. As others have mentioned, infections can spread and things can get into bloodstream and clogged in your heart or your brain, resulting in death. In fact, this is the major reason that periodontal disease limits the average lifespan by 20%. FLOSS! I can't honestly state how many professionals have said this. One last thing, I do not know what to think of this, but take a look: http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive...D0405B838DF1D3 What he's saying is that oranges and lemons and vinegar have an effect on the teeth that cleans them. Conventional destistry says that any acids are bad for the teeth. And this is what I believe even now. Still, I wanted to bring up this link. In hindsight, I've eaten a lot of lemons lately for the vitamin C and phytonutrients. I had no idea that they might help teeth. Still, it could be that this link is erroneous and that citric acid, as any acid, is bad for the teeth. Consider it just an interesting link, but not definitive enough to decide.
