Speaking of S/A, today at work had really odd requests

Oh I had gotten so side tracked I forgot to mention the other weird ass request from yesterday, also involving S/A

55 yr old woman requests me to her apartment for her alcoholism. There it’s her and her husband. Her husband is slightly drunk, and she appears completely blitzed. Takes him a few minutes to rouse her. She can barely open her eyes, she’s slurring everything she says, and generally behaving like a little kid (but hey, lots of adults do when they are shithouse drunk)

The far less drunk husband is like we’re both alcoholics, had a year sober but my wife relapsed first because her sponsor of a year dropped her when she found out we voted for Trump. Then the super drunk wife piped in “she’s a BITCH!” And the husband is like “please honey”. Then they wanted to get into politics but I don’t play that shit, despite voting the same way I said sorry that it ended a friendship but politics is outside of my scope here. So they dropped it, but the wife wanted to slur through mentioning that she also relapsed because she was “disturbed” in finding out a different friend from AA was trans and had her boobs cut off….oooook

So I ask how much is she drinking per day and the husband says 4-5 shots/day. And I’m looking at this completely blitzed client that can barely walk and speak, and who should also have decent alcohol tolerance at this point being that she relapsed months ago and has been drinking daily. And I’m thinking WTF is with these tiny amounts of alcohol mentioned today?

Well, being no stranger to an addict minimizing their usage amount, I asked the husband (because the wife is inebriated to the point of worthless asking anything), is there any chance she is sneaking and drinking more than that? Or mixing in things like opiates or benzos? And was like no, no way, I’m the one that gives it to her and I drink with her

So I mention this just isn’t lining up. She seems far more intoxicated than just 4-5 shots worth today. Then the husband drops oh well about a year ago she had treatment for stage 3 cancer involving 28 rounds of radiation, chemo, and she died during the complete removal of her uterus and had to be revived and given 3 back to back blood transfusions. Since then she won’t eat solid foods, won’t shower, won’t go outside, and seems to be in a constant state of brain fog

And I’m like oh wow, well it sounds like there’s a possibility there could be something neurological going on, has she been in to see any follow up doctors or a neurologist at all? He said she won’t go. Well, I said, that may be at least in part to her brain making a subconscious association with those very invasive and traumatic past medical procedures and any healthcare office…

Either way, still no easy solution. I gave him info on medical PoA and guardianship processes and recommended as gently as I could to stop enabling her drinking. The wife had erratically said she didn’t want and did want to go to the behavioral health hospital about 5 times. Being that I was already over shift I said I am not going to be able to transport her, she’s too intoxicated to get into my work van and she presents a strong possibility she is going to change her mind about going during this process. I had long since learned you don’t transport drunk flighty erratic people anywhere when over shift unless you want to get into a nightmare scenario of being 3-4 hours over stuck with them changing their mind 50 times and requiring constant verbal re-direction

But they had also already mentioned that her mother is filthy filthy rich. I was wondering as I pulled up to their fancy apartment in a part of town I certainly couldn’t afford, but checked and discovered she was on the state’s Medicaid program. I thought “someone must be paying for her to stay here, that’s the only way. No one in any other situation would be on Medicaid in this complex, the rent has to be at least $3k/month”. And then finding out they’re not working and just drinking all day I was thinking “ah suspicions confirmed”. So the husband was like “honey I can call us a rideshare to go to the hosital” and she was like “no he can’t, he’s a useless man-child!!”

And I was thinking he’s an enabler but he’s been nothing but supportive while I’ve been here. You’re actually acting like a woman-child. But if she did have some kind of neurological problem then it’s partly not her fault

I still arranged for the hospital to be expecting them to make it harder for her to bail on the idea and then I left them resources and left. Not as interesting as the other request from that day but just weird to have two situations where people were (apparently, still not sure if I believe it…) drinking far less than I expected
