Every state that collapses first loses its ability to agree with its own "known" history. I put known in quotation marks because this is how totalitarian states collapse, too. It does not matter whether the "known history" is true or is a lie; what matters is that the state can't agree on what it is.

Humans, for their part, are mostly indifferent to truth and falsehood. In each generation, groups form and recognizable primate social patterns. Truth, is one group's interest. In America we are in one of our phases where the truth group are being crushed by the other groups that are tired of how fucking tedious the truth is.

And, the truth also does not give a flying fuck what you think. That upsets a lot of conservatives, who cling to beliefs more than testable maxims. That's the definition of conservtism in America: "values voters."
