Given New Order's history as the former members of Joy Division after Ian Curtis's death, some believe "Leave Me Alone" carries echoes of their past. There's a theory that the repeated plea to "leave me alone" could be the band's way of asking people to move on from Ian's death, or perhaps even speaking for him, as if he desired peace. The song's musical style, with its focus on cascading guitar and bass lines and less reliance on synthesizers, also links it more closely to Joy Division's sound.
