how do some people get 'special' surnames. and by special i mean: Necro mancer, Misaligned______, to name a few.

Once you hit lvl 20 you can type /surname 'desired name' no special characters or spaces though. Special ones are requested by petition through a GM like Sly'bath. GM events also grant you extended surnames like 'Player name' The warlord <The mystical Order>

I believe he's talking about Soandso the [Heretic/Defiler/Warlock], Soandso the Wanderer, Soandso the Champion of Suchandsuch, etc.

Those are given for participation in GM events such as the Best of the Best tourneys. First place winners of the BotB gain the level 60 title for their class: the druid winner is titled, "Soandso the Hierophant", the runner up "Soandso the Preserver", third place "Soandso the Wanderer", etc.

Not sure about the other GM event titles.

No, not talking about titles. I'm referring to characters who get special privileges to their surnames from GM's.

There is literally a character named "Necro mancer" (e.g. his surname is not capitalized, hence it kind of looks like one word.)

There is also a character called "Misaligned" (e.g. his surname has a whole bunch of spaces, so his name isn't centered).

There are a few more which I forgot.

Ah, that's just people finding a way to glitch the naming system, such as inputting a weird ascii symbol that can't be displayed in the nameplate which registers as a space instead. Hence the second word being lowercase - the nameplate thinks it's still one string of letters. Although, GMs will usually capitalize certain letters in your surname for you, but they won't add spaces or any special symbols like that. I'm sure if you ask a GM to give you a capitalized letter in your surname after glitching out the nameplate, they'd get rid of the blank ascii symbol you inputted first.
