Because it locks the name as unusable. You don't see that person online anymore and you know there is a good chance you knew a cheater.
Or better yet, delete the character and ban the account. That way even if the account gets unbanned a year+ later, the character/gear/plat is still gone. And, I can easily check to see if the account was banned, "Haven't seen soandso online lately, wonder what's up...Hey, P99 is letting me make a character named soandso, guess I won't be seeing them again."

It would be harmless enough to release a few statistics I'm sure, right!? Hook us up with some stats - inquiring minds want to know =)
To be honest, I'm still trying to get a handle on

A) Just how much I confiscated.

B) Where it came from.

The bottom line: it was a lot... considerably more than I expected to find, which has me a little concerned about a potential dupe/exploit mechanism.

I may release some numbers in the future, just trying to get it all figured out still.

On the surface this seems like a good idea, but I'm personally not in favor of it. Partially because if I was wrong about some of the bans it's incredibly painful for me to go back and undelete/unban.

I have an ongoing concern about names running out on this server. But will have to approach that from a different angle.

I can see your argument about "unjust/innaccurate" deletions and don't really have a counterargument. My comment was mostly directed at the history this server has of "permanent" bans. I'm happy as long as the character/equipment/plat is removed from the economy, however that happens. Turnover is good for the server's economy, but having people buying multiple accounts of geared 60's just further cements the status-quo.

Permanently not having access to their characters is the result of either option.. What's your point?
Deleting them frees up the character names. Whether that's good or bad, you decide.

Opening the names both gives the player a chance to start over as same character (from scratch, legit), if that's their wish, or frees up names for others to eventually take. Given that Ephi voices concern over an eventual name shortage... hmm...

I can see how a player starting on P99 might choose to buy a character (RMT) first before they really know better. They might feel like it's no big deal at the time. Deleting the character would allow that player to just come back and play legit. I think the more innocent RMT buyers (such a thing?) might choose to start over.

Imo, I am very very very glad that this has happened and I hope anyone involved in any of this business never comes back ever ever unless they are seriously reformed lol but...

I stopped playing because prices kept going up and up and up and up and it seemed like plat was everywhere and platlord must have been making serious $$$$ from everyone coughing up $ for plat. I will probably start playing off and on again in the hopes that those participating in this kind of stuff are gone, at least temporarily. Indeed, foolish for it will continue right, in some form...
