I kited in Skyfire and BW and they'd stop chasing if you get more than ~300 away, but resume chasing if you got within ~150 of them. Guarantee it's still like that on EQMac to this day.

This mechanic could complicate pulling the hunter/forager cycle in TT when they spawned a long ways from your camp.
Keeping them close would definitely help, but it seemed like time was a factor as well. A mob that gave up pursuit also seemed to not just stop chasing, but warp back to a [random?] point on their patrol path.
