I kited in Skyfire and BW and they'd stop chasing if you get more than ~300 away, but resume chasing if you got within ~150 of them. Guarantee it's still like that on EQMac to this day.
This mechanic could complicate pulling the hunter/forager cycle in TT when they spawned a long ways from your camp.

Keeping them close would definitely help, but it seemed like time was a factor as well. A mob that gave up pursuit also seemed to not just stop chasing, but warp back to a [random?] point on their patrol path.

I'm not certain if time was a factor or not. On my druid I'd often kite named mobs with way more HP than I could easily handle, or else I'd engage at 20% mana and med kite for 20-30 minutes to ensure I got the kill. The only thing that seemed to make them stop persuing was getting too far away.

Mobs adding players to their hate list by proxy would be awesome if implemented here too [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.].
Add the second part and I can almost guarantee the first will start happening.

My "time factor" impression may have arisen from classic-era packetloss and latency. Even when I thought I was doing a good job teasing the frog back to camp, the server and my client did not really agree where we were in the world. Once re-sync'ed, the frog seemed to "warp" back to his patrol path.
