I kind of hope that Red99 never happens. I mean, don't get me wrong, the thought of a PvP Classic EQ gives me a semi. But Project1999 currently only has ~700 players on at peak time, which has not really increased much since last year. If red99 opens, i'd say 50% of the players will switch over, if not more. That leaves ~350 or so players left on Project1999, which is not IMO, a sustainable population for the server - too difficult to find groups and what not.

Realistically, I would like to see 1500 players on P1999 before a PvP server opens to help relieve the overpopulation. Until then, I just don't think we have enough players.

This server's population problem has much more to do with what people actually do. Throughout the history of the server, any popular dungeon/camp has been obscenely overcrowded while much of the leveling content has been on the thin side. Every sweet solo spot, item camp and popular dungeon is occupied to the point where you have to get up at dawn for a chance to access it without waiting in line for hours, but try to start a group in Overthere or something and you'll find slim pickings. Cutting the population in half (although I doubt 50% will switch to PvP) will do wonders for one aspect of the game and be terrible for the other. It's an unfortunate byproduct of the widespread obsession with maximum possible XP (which is generally achieved by soloing) and raking in the most loot while the traditional gameplay is much less appealing so many years later. Now it's almost impossible to find a group between 20 and 50, but look around and you'll find a hundred magicians and necromancers mindlessly grinding in every conceivable solo spot.

Ok I will bite. What do you think P99 can do to reach 1500 players besides deny a pvp server to people who would prefer to play on one? Any marketing ideas besides your captive audience policy?

One note... Opening a pvp server will absolutely help the financial base of P99 as a whole. The comparatively tiny population of vztz donated thousands to that project.

people who beat the game don't beat it more than 30 times, they will probably try to r99 if they aren't scared.
