I'm kind of old. And as much as I hate to admit it, the body wears down. After smoking 2+ packs of ciggies a day for 15 years, I was going up a single flight of stairs and was running up it, and realized I was almost totally out of breath and sweating. Maybe it is just me. But I just realized at that moment, this is ridiculous. I was still young. The cigs were starting to take their inevitable toll. I went on the patch for 6 months and finally tapered to nothing, and have not had a single smoke since. 20 years later, I only can say, I can now still run up flights of stairs like I did when I was in my early 20's, and do. I'm not preaching. I'm not judging. I could tell other stories about my substance mistakes and struggles. But the body wears down. And sometimes it can happen real fast. And substance abuse will grease those rails but good. Think of it as game mechanics. Opiates have some of the worse aggro in game. Once it gets aggro on you, it is almost impossible to get it off. And before you know it, every day is the same: aggro, then feign death until the next day. Repeat.

I don't think advice about any recreational chemical use has any impact. People like to catch a buzz, and they're going to do what they want to do. Proselytize if you wish, but it's only for your own benefit.

Lots of little wannabe dictators hoping to control and punish the behavior of others.

How do you know I haven't been in that room myself? In any event, wise one, I'll say whatever the goddam fuck I want to say. And you can say whatever cock-in-mouth junkiespeak you want to say. Fair deal? Bon voyage!

But I wonder if the problem isn't compounded by illegality? A friend of mine had a lower back injury about 15 years ago. He could not work, because he couldn't walk or sit up from the pain. But he liked his work (he is a reference librarian and archivist, and sits for hours transferring print and handwritten documents into digital media). He is currently, and has been for years, on a constant dose of fentanyl patches and now methadone as well. (I have no idea how pain meds work, but he has a complicated prescription.) The end result is, he still has his career. He can work, and he is the official archivist now for a well-known artist, so he wins, imho. But he would be the first to tell you, the painkillers are impacting his life in so many ways. He has developed "co-morbid" problems that make his life pretty unpleasant. But he has legal prescriptions because of a genuine medical condition. And it is still a huge burden on him, these kinds of drugs. Illegality -- and all the shit that flows from that -- seems to make these drugs take even a worse toll. I often wonder if, we should just make opiates legal, but requiring registration, so as to help people crawl out of the shadows of illegal use, and help them at least manage their addiction. And yes, addiction is what it turns in to. These drugs are no joke. It is impossible to not become severely dependent on them if you use them regularly. Impossible. I'm not mad, "bro" -- I'm just saying what I know to be fact. I apologize if my language harshed your mellow. But, fuck you anyway. Just because I'm not in the mood for either 1) your ignorance or 2) your BS. These drugs are not toys. They will own you. Fast.

My ignorance? Did you miss the part where two of my friends have long-term addictions and I managed an SRO full of formerly homeless junkies with mental illness?
You give a good self-righteous rant; it just doesn't make any sense. None of what you seem to consider wisdom will make any difference to anyone who reads it. I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do. I had the freedom to learn from my own mistakes, just like you. But, please, feel free to continue getting all whipped up. Everyone wants valuable health advice from a guy who can't walk up a flight of stairs. | ||
