Actually he used ironic correctly. Ironic can refer to a situation that is unexpected; i.e. "oh is my tattoo showing in this pic? oh how unexpected that it happens to be showing, cool"

It is only not ironic from your viewpoint due to the fact that you intended for it to be showing.

wouldn't that be more of a coincidence?

I tend to enjoy http://theoatmeal.com/comics/irony 's version of irony. Though of course it is not solely isolated to these 3 definitions, it is still entertaining either way.
