Canada knows Trump is all about optics and if they just commit to a bunch of meaningless shit they had already committed to, to make it look like a Trump W, they get to avoid tariffs, and we get to avoid the market implosion that was underway. Basically none of the fentanyl even comes from Canada lol.

Meanwhile, relations between a critical ally are permanently marred, giving China and/or Europe an in to drive an economic wedge between us, should the US-China trade war heat up.

Again, tariffs on anyone but China and maybe Mexico were never anything but fucking stupid. The US will need the largest duty-free market it can get if it wants to confront China economically. If anything, if Trump was going to demand something from Mexico and Canada, it should have just been that they put their own tariffs on China in exchange for tariff-free access to American markets.

For the sake of fairness, they did close the de minimis "loophole" with China.
