For that method, theres no need to root. Just pull a whole bunch of mobs or the entire basement (if no one there), ae slow, and torpor yourself till they all dead. Use a kilva's or some DS thing after monk has whacked em all once. Ghetto version of ench / bard low lvl PL

Or toss him a few Kilva's Flame DS potions and some heals. Shamans are godawful at PLing.
