Default Going LD while in combat

So after a recent incident involving hair in my mouse's laser and accidentally Xing out of my client leading to a death (even though if I'm ingame I can tank the fucking thing I was fighting for 2 minutes or more without heals. oh well)... it got me to thinking about how LD characters behave when in combat.

I thought I remembered in classic (and previously on blue too?) that a LD character will cast spells that it had memorized (healing self, nuking mobs, etc), and will melee things that come into melee range, until the character disappears after a minute or two. Didn't melee swings from a player start hitting as hard as an NPC's swings at that level would have, too?

Why isn't that happening anymore? I didn't see any threads on it with a quick search, but I didn't want to make a bug report before seeing what other peoples' recollections of this were.

im fairly certain, at the least the part about a PC fighting mobs for minutes if LD while in combat is currently occuring.

we had one of our mages running around wailing on things one time and initiated combat with like 3 mobs over the span of one of the longest character poof ive ever seen.

Maybe I have petitioned and shouldn't have fully looted my corpse then. Because my opening spellcasts that I pull with + melee have killed the last 3 mobs with me not dropping below 70%. Yet when I LDed at 80+% life in front of a 2/3 health mob, I was dead under 2 minutes later when I could log back in [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

https://www.project1999.com/forums/s...nk+dead+combat suggests that as recently as a couple years ago, LD characters will cast spells but only from the 8th spell gem.

Hmm.

I still shouldn't have died though. Damn game.

On Rallos Zek an LD wizard used to be basically a warrior with nukes. Some people went LD to win their fights. I think eventually they normalized the linkdead melee power of casters though. It seemed to just spam your best memmed attack spell and use your best heal spell etc

yea back in the early days of PVP on tallon zek people would often LD themselves in an attempt to win a fight because they would gain the equivalent of an NPC level of melee power.

I'm not sure when it got tuned down or removed. I seem to recall still going LD during Lucling/PoP times and not worrying about dieing b/c my char was way stronger LD than it was with me actually playing it.

On blue I had it happen twice where I was soloing something (and I'm a cleric, so that means having to actively try and kill stuff) and I went LD and came back to a lootable corpse of what I had been fighting in front of me, and myself reasonably good on HP. That would imply that I was both healing myself and nuking because melee-wise bixies give me a run for my money.

Would love to see someone test this, even if it's on a level 1! I've also gone LD mid-fight and must have continued to melee, at least-- upon logging back in, the mob was dead and I hadn't perished. Very curious to see if you indeed cast spells whilst LD or not
