One of the better theories I read was that the NK never shows up at Winterfell and that battle was a diversion as the NK and his larger force w/ Dragon take King's Landing. So the living win the battle of Winterfell and most of the "important" characters survive.

Thats a great theory!! I love that the mad king may not have been a bad guy after all! But was told by Bran in a vision to place all the explosives under Kings Landing to 'kill them all' but it was to prepare to kill the undead army 20+ years later.

I might be wrong, but doesn't E02 end with the undead army, including the night king, looking at Winterfell?

Still possibility, he will move to King's Landing instead of participate in the battle - but if I am not mistaken, he is currently sitting on a horse a few miles out of Winterfell. Or that was just some other white walker dude?

I don't believe we saw the NK or the Undead Dragon.

I am hoping that part is true as well about the Mad King that would be a really cool detail.
