Default eqgame.exe has encountered a problem

Playing with a Voodoo5 5500. The game played well last year. I came back and I know it was upgraded to Velious, I installed the latest patch. Now I get the error Eqgame.exe has encountered a problem. I have tried changing resolutions and that has not worked. I tried one of the other servers and the game came right up. So I don't know what else to look at?

Are the devs able to please shed any light on what major software version changes have been made to dsetup.dll in recent years that might have triggered a new layer of incompatibility? Is there a new system version requirement of some kind? (DirectX, .NET Framework, Vis C++, etc. etc.)

I too am currently battling this exact same issue trying to run machines with 32-bit CPUs and older chipsets. Titanium launches fine and I'm able to play on other servers even with the P99 patch installed, but attempting to connect to a P99 server results in the classic "eqgame.exe has encountered a problem and must close" error dialog. My log file can be seen below.

Rolling dsetup.dll back to an earlier P99 version resolves the crashing issue and allows connection to the character select screen. I happen to have the one from Duxa's All-In-One Installer which is v1.9.0.0 dated 10/8/2013. It connects fine. It sounds like OP has had success in more recent years than that though.

Devs, any insight as to what known limitations the current DLL has would be eternally appreciated! I'm actively trying to figure out what's causing this incompatibility but am really just taking shots in the dark at the moment.

Here's the software config I'm currently testing different hardware on:
Windows XP Pro 32 bit SP3 // DirectX9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) // .NET Framework 4.0.30319 // P99 v49b

Thank you!!
