Default Determining a mob's level by looking at their damage?

I have seen a couple of old threads on this topic, but the math doesn't seem to add up to what I am seeing. Does anyone have the correct formula(s) for determining a mob's level by looking at the damage they do?

For normal Classic and Kunark mobs, it is:

Mob Level = Max Damage / 4 + 15

For example, a mob that does 116 max damage...

Mob Level = 116 / 4 + 15
= 29 + 15
= 44

I know this works for level 40+ mobs, but I am not sure for levels below that.

I have no idea what it is for Velious mobs.

This is good info, and very much worth checking if you're in a new zone on your enchanter/necro/druid/etc doing some charming. While the mob's name can sometimes be a giveaway to what the lower and higher versions of something are, the max damage it hits for is certainly an indicator too [You must be logged in to view images. Excellent, thanks!

When charming on my necro and enchanter in the mid 50s I would always watch the max hit of a new pet and my target...

if the mob can hit for 144 it is usually high enough lvl to summon (which is important to know when charm solo'ing). if the max hit was only 140 or less it wouldn't, even if it was of the same type (spectral knights in KC or bugs at NG, for example).

Not sure what that translates to in exact lvl, but the max hit was def a function of the lvl of the mob and 144 meant it was high enough lvl to summon.

140 is level 50, how I like my pets. Maybe I’m a big puss puss.

Here's how I know how to do it, but I don't know how well this holds for mobs under 40, mobs in Velious, or the types named mobs you'll find that are 60+.

Each level corresponds to 4 points of damage.
A level 40 mob hits for 100.
A level 50 mob hits for 140.
A level 52 mob would hit for 148, a level 55 mob would for 160, etc.

This above description is hopefully easier to remember than a formula.

I'd love to know myself when the formula above breaks down, if anyone knows!

If you sit down, they will hit you for their max damage. This is how you test charm level caps for zones like Kael.

This must not hold true for animations. 'Kintaz's Animation' (level 49 spell) hits for max of 52 which would make him only level 28. In Xornn's Enchanter guide it says, "The 52 hitter is a 38th summon, leaving the level range at 34th to 38th."

I wonder how the guide comes to the conclusions that the pet is level 38 if it hits for 52?

Pets have a lower max hit by level than NPCs, generally speaking.
