I don't remember the exact number. It was around 60-70 I think. I didn't turn in any until I was 9. I then turned in all of the ones I had saved up.

There used to be a 300 gnoll fang guide (the turn in apparently used to keep giving xp at higher levels) which I think is pretty excessive. After a few levels, I was ready to see more of the world.

At about that same level you can do the putrid bear pelt quest, which gives both good xp and good money.

Once you turn in all those fangs, stay away from the area of the rogue and monk guilds, because there's a high level shadow knight guard there that will probably one shot you with harm touch. Other than that, the other guards are mostly going to be low levels.
