Let guard in ek mostly kill it then charm/pull it away. Break charm with hide then finish it off

Personally I let the hounds kill each other, break charm when low and kill them for full xp....I find it faster myself as I'm getting 2 kills instead of just one

If you're after spider silk from crag spiders watch out for that poison dot they proc.
An easy alternative to get into the high teens is kodiak bears in Rathe Mountains near the dirty druids, and on the bright side you might get lucky on stock up on a few HQ bear hides to fail combines on after raising tailoring some off EK spiders. Depending on your hours crocs in Oasis aren't half bad for mid teens before either EK or RM. | ||

As was said earlier, just have a plan for charm breaks and try to pay attention to your spell log so you can react quickly. Checking your pet's and the monster's hp and juggling that with root/charm breaks and medding throughout might seem like a lot, but you get a feel for it after a few (near) deaths. As long as you keep root up, charm break should ruin your day only occasionally.
