Fairly new to EQ, few questions

Regarding 2) all class are viable, but some will be slower without gear, some class even might be hard to solo, but pick whatever you want to play, if you're interested in healers, druid will be the easiest to level solo and without gear but if you want to group cleric would do just as the shaman is... Play what you want, not what people will tell you is "better", that is your char and your playtime...

Understand that while Druids, Clerics, and Shamans all represent the "priest" archtype and all of them have healing spells, only Clerics are truly main-healers in this game in the long run. In other words, there's a difference between playing a class that can heal, versus a class (Cleric) that'll be routinely desired by groups and raids as the main healer.

depending on group and environment, people playing flawlessly (no melee stealing agro, no charming...), paladin or ranger can main heal

I did this at KC on my ranger once. Saw a group ooc for a healer at LCY.

I did my best to look like a Druid; hit up wolf form, /role and /lfg. Went over and asked for an invite as I saw they were LFM. I suppose I never lied nor claimed to be a Druid, but they did fall for the deception and I kept everyone alive.

Was awkward when wolf form faded and I was left sitting there in my golden onside like c3po with a couple of lightning rods.

I would probably only make this claim explicitly about raiding. A shaman with torpor is an excellent healer outside of raid targets quading for 300+.
