I know most of you are poor and probably live with relatives or rent. And if you're a red player you're probably in a halfway house, mental institution, or a "guest" of the state.
In either case, if you do ever find yourself in a position to own a home you'll need to hire a contractor at some point. When you do don't ever pay them 50% at half completion. Withholding all payment until the full job is done satisfactorily is the best leverage you have to motivate them to perform. You don't want them leaving your job halfway to pursue a more lucrative job that popped up, do you? Hint: The answer is no.

2) It might be reasonable to agree on milestone payments. E.g. in your case: once the contractor is done patching that leaky part of the roof above your 50 year old TV screen in the back of your 40 year old white trash trailer, you might pay him some of the agreed sum before he continues on with repairing the wires you illegally attached to the public power line next to the park. You might choose to play hardball and ask him to get all work done before any payment, but then he might decide to also play hardball, get his other illegal worker friends and fuck up you and your trailer to make sure he gets paid instead of repairing the wire.

To get back to the thread:
Paying 10k for the delivered item seems reasonable to settle the situation. Both can then agree on another earring for another 10k or just go their ways.

I'm not convinced that will happen as the seller has discovered other people will pay double or triple that. I suggest a better arbitration would be 5k goodwill payment now with the remaining 15k paid on reception of the second ring. Both parties also owe 1k to the Norrathian Arbitration Committee for peacefully resolving the matter.

Most contractors require 50% down to even begin a job. This covers the purchasing of materials etc. The rest is paid upon completion. The fact that you don't know this as a homeowner probably means you are still rocking the pink bathtub with "gold" trim look.
