I've duo'd Phinny with 2 necro pets. Its a lot less stressful to just use mages, there's a clear power difference between the two.

The short version is that EOT does about the same damage as the 53 rogue pet, but improves on everything else: it doesn't need to be constantly repositioned, it bashes to interrupt casters, it looks cool, and it doesn't poof instantly when a mob attacks it. IIRC Necrious was actually soloing some fairly high level stuff in HS with it; you can chain ST while you heal it up if necessary.
