Magician lvl 57 Earth Pet change

After patch 54, the Magician spell Greater Vocaration Earth summons a pet with damage capped at 52dmg per hit. It used to be 70dmg per hit. The spell Vocaration Earth summons a pet that could hit for 56dmg.

Was it intended for a lvl 57 spell to be inferior to a lvl 51 spell?

Basically the 49 mage pet with foci is king. I am not sure if this was tested or what but probably a dev that plays green saw a mage with 57 pet soloing something and "felt" it was a good change.

Classic researcher Dolalin provided evidence that Mage pets hit that hard back in classic. You'd have to look through his post history to find it though, I don't have a link handy.

It really does sound wrong that a lower level pet should hit better though ... maybe there's more at play than just max damage?

Wait are you saying that a high summon 51 earth can hit for more than a low summon 57 earth? That's normal.
