An unknown error occurred when trying to join the server

Can't get to character select screen, server select shows up fine but when I select any server I get the message: An unknown error occurred when trying to join the server.

Anyone experiencing this and able to provide advice or a fix?

It seems like this is a widespread issue but its only effecting certain people, maybe we can get a better idea who is being affected regionally? I'm in the sf bay area, ca
