As a population we are greedy, self-centered and fat. We make decisions based on financial viability over morality. Seems like it started in the 80’s.

I had a friend once that used to always hate the stock market and say that is what screwed us all up because both the board of directors and the CEO of business have a fiduciary responsibility to the shareholders, not the greater good.
