So here's a conundrum I sometimes think about. You have an institution for the sick and insane. Most of these people arguably are completely damaged and out of control either from some kind of dementia or brain damage. But sometimes these institutions get a certain type of individual that responds very well to inhumane and severe treatment. They kinda get right, because even if they are damaged the stress reroutes them.
So in modern clinical medicine it seems the idea is to 'minimize stress if at all possible' in every case. There is almost no acceptable use of force or violent punishment. What if we are being dumb by not inducing or overloading with stress. What if the alzhiemers and dementias are dead already and that 1 person is trapped in there with them. Do we not sanction stronger more assertive and aggressive methods at sedating the psychos and totally crazy dead and then give 1 said individual a chance to come out of it in an environment where they can start to function and be trained? This is obviously an age old question and asylumns in the 50's clearly sided on the more punitive side of this issue. I'm all for strapping people down and brushing their teeth for them until they can regularly do it on their own. If they can't. Well, tough shit, it's better to be stressed, sick, demented and have good oral hygiene, then to be sick, demented, and in pain constantly from rotting teeth. Aka stressed anyway. That's my argument. And how I would prefer to be treated if I was at that low level of functioning. | ||
