Summon pets + charm mobs

I just started and got a necro up to 20, purchased the undead charm spell and my summon pet, had pet out and went to charm a mob and .... can only have one pet.
I'm specifically remember doing this in classic (charmed an undead cleric at later levels and it buffed pet and myself), did this change on p1999?
