If you were listening to Skid Row thats on you. There was loads of badass metal and industrial being made in the 80s that sounds nothing like hair metal. Grunge became the hair metal of its day.

Yeah that's kinda my point. Maybe these hipsters didn't like mainstream grunge / alternative. I enjoyed it. It got much worse later on, but 90s were a good time for music on the radio.
