Default Mage Fire Pet DS cast in combat?

Ran into an issue last night where I summoned my fire pet and immediately was hit by a mob.
My pet turned and fought the mob down, but never cast his DS on himself.

Is this normal? Normally I cast him and then cast Burnout before fighting, so have not run into this before.

/Pet Guard
Wait until the mob hits your pet
/Pet Back

Basically the fire pet only DSes itself when it's idle. You need to have it /pet back just after the mob that attacked you hit it, to give your pet the maximum amount of time to DS himself. It may take a few hits for him to DS himself though.

What he said. You'll run into this when you start chain casting pets as well. Just blast "back off" and you'll see him cast and go back in.

The only thing different is if he gets dispelled in a fight; he will recast his ds on his own there.

Best bet I have had with my Mage and chain casting pets is to level in open zones in low population mob areas. Then send first fire pet in, run quite a ways away from the mob. Summon new pet before first pet dies, just sit there until pet casts DS then send it in. Odds are you will be far enough away that pet will cast DS on itself before the mob reaches you. If it is being dumb and not casting, move far enough away from your pet to make it move just a bit and then it usually casts the DS.
