This is likely done on purpose to deter or make it less convenient for RMTers to sell accounts

To prevent RMTs I'd say ?

You know, with all people who've forgotten what email they created an account with/ don't have access to it anymore [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.][You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] asking to reset it (so they can sell it and buyer can use any email address they want)

Actually hadn't considered the old RMT days, the date seems to coincide. RIP old ass email account, I never really knew you.
