Does 4:3 make a difference because you can see more up/down than you can in 16:9?

Yeah, from testing it seems like vertical FOV will keep going up if you keep reducing width but past 4:3 you're losing too much horizontally. It may just be a camera trick but it also seems like you can zoom out much further in 4:3.

Played blue in 16:9 for years with no issues but gonna give this a try for this go-round.

I think the command that worked for me ended up being

/viewport 640 0 1440 1920

or somewhere thereabouts on a monitor running at 2560x1440 - probably some shaved off here and there since I adjusted my window size to not overlap the taskbar.
