Try nuking the mobs just 1 time before they drop (for actual damage, resists obviously do not count,) see if that makes any difference.

Was this over the holiday weekend? As a 25% xp bonus was active, so you were receiving extra xp. This may be why it looked like more xp, while the pet was probably still taking half. I tested on my Mage and pet still takes 50% xp if not unsummoned, so I don't think it's been taken away.

I've been solo'ing with my Mage out at the giant fort in BW lately. I firmly believe I've been getting more exp per kill by reclaiming/killing my pet right before finishing the mob off with a nuke than when I was trying the "keep the same pet alive" method.
