Mostly Im joking and just saying funny one liners, but I am trying to answer your question about why I dont think the parties flipped.
I wanted to add, incase geography (north/south) makes it seem as though the conservatives are "southern racists" and the liberals are "northern city dwellers" even though the republicans lived in the north during the civil war.
this is because the civil war was between: expansionists vs settlers
the expansionists, are the democrats, they like to go out into the new fronteers, the conservatives are the settlers, the oens that stay where we've settled.
In the old days before the civil war, NYC and the northern colonies were the settled areas, and the south was where the democrats have built the new fronteers.
now, today, the south is where people have long settled, it's very old there. No expansion.. no new lands.. (conservative)
And why are cities blue now? well that's because we are no longer Agrarian, we're trade based, we're international, we're exploring a new communications age, that is the new fronteer, so the cities are where the expansionists live now, ironically!
So, you see, the same people that wanted to expand into the new fronteers of today, didnt know that it was wrong but were using slaves back in the day... and today, they dont know communism is wrong but theyre trying to use it to replace their slaves because they just cant get enough of the free workers.
and once again the republicans say NO! the fact that they now live in the south is just because republicans are settlers, and settlers dont live where the expansionists are and the expansionists now live in NYC and California.
and so: the parties never flipped.
