I had a co-worker today tell me that retail WoW has an updated disclaimer they make you sign promising that you won’t say anything racist, sexist, homophobic, all the hate speech stuff. He said he hadn’t played since the last expansion and when he logged in the disclaimer came up and he signed it. I asked I wonder what happens if you say no, do they just kick you off or what?
Anyway, he said it was a long-winded disclaimer and he paraphrased it to me and apparently part of it said “the internet used to be a safe place where people could come to share common interests” or some perfumed speech like that…
…and I was like “the internet used to be some safe, loving place? What the fuck internet were they on?” The internet used to be a THOUSAND times worse than it is today. Most forums I remember had ZERO moderation back in the day. It wasn’t pics of gaping assholes or old dudes blowing each other, or even the N-word spam you had to worry about, it was blind links to download viruses or Trojans which would hack your browser and start spamming porn windows and stuff
Remember the porn window spam where closing one made 2 more open? Remember the pop ups that would skate around your screen when you tried to close them? People seem to have some seriously rose colored glasses remembering the old internet pre-“gamergate”. If you didn’t have a thick skin for insults and even better virus protection, your psyche and your computer were fucked
