Sol a and sol b were notorious for zoning bugs in early release. I forget the exact error message but you'd try to zone into/out of them and it would boot you back to lavastorm(or back into sol a /sol b). There was another bug with using these dungeons and that sometimes you'd fall through the earth if you even successfully transitioned. They fixed it eventually and that might be what you are thinking of about them "needing work".
Almost everything existed in kedge except for phiny when the game was released. Nothing was itemized at all. No items and no gold/plat drops. Phiny himself was only added with the itemization patch.
