“Freedom” doesn’t mean irresponsibility or an absence of civic purpose. The word you’re looking for is apathy

A Protestant culture didn’t need to codify such a situation. They had a culture of critical thinking, education, discipline, and civics
I'd just swap out "Protestant culture" for "balanced society suffering limited delusion with pathological thought restrained by natural adversity." I think we can all agree then that exhaustive enummmeration of rights and wrongs wouldn't be necessary in those circumstances. Otherwise this exchange was a good line of reasoning 👍😊

I don't think this is true aside from the movement to divest consequence from action. we can only be free insofar as we are accountable. society has a deeply vested interest in the people's capacity to behave non-destructively.

no, not really, but if he's going to feed, clothe and care for us, then i think it is necessary. ordinarily bad decisions would enjoy enough negative reinforcement on their own that they'd struggle to proliferate [You must be logged in to view images. If I may amend - you want to not want a spanking from Uncle Sam. this is your utopia, free from "degeneracy". [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

reality is tyrranical, it's only a matter of what rules us: nature, our conscience, social contracts.

also, I don't think degeneracy is a very good word because it connotes some sort of moral piety on behalf of the accuser and bears a strong religious association. there are all sorts of bad behaviors that qualify as destructive and wouldn't be considered "degenerate," while there are all sorts of behaviors that would generally be considered degenerate, while not necessarily being destructive.
