I actually like Boardwalk Empire better than the Sopranos. Sort of a similar underlying theme (crime family drama) but in a lot of ways this is a story about the origins of organized crime - like nationally organized. If you don't mind some slight spoilers, reading about some of the characters who were real people and how things went for them in real life gives you a new perspective to a lot of the interactions in the show. Just the whole prohibition era is more interesting for a show like this than modern day like The Sopranos.
