Surprisingly, you're getting some solid suggestions here. If it's on HBO, Showtime, AMC, or FX it's worth a look. Carnivale was an awesome, albeit short-lived (two seasons) series on HBO. Still one of my favorites.

But if you've got a Netflix subscription, you can get on right now and set yourself up with The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy, and Hell on Wheels to keep you busy for a while. I think someone even suggested those exact three already.

If you're into SciFi

Star Trek (I've included a recommended starter episode in each series)

Star Trek: The Original Series (not even joking)
for nostalgia, background, and more
-- episode: the city on the edge of forever, shore leave, trouble with tribbles, the corbomite maneuver

Star Trek: The Next Generation
for philosophy, strategy, dialogue, introspection, and idealism
-- episode: lower decks, first contact, the inner light

Star Trek: Deep Space 9
for politics, seediness, backstabbing, reality, camaraderie, and lies (oh and lots of mirror . . heh) - and s38!
-- episode: the visitor, progress [the episode that gave my druid his name!]

Star Trek: Voyager
[precursor: the doctor is the best part of this series]
for technobabble, captain overmanagement, the worst vulcan, and a retarded crew
-- episode: death wish

Star Trek: Enterprise (better than people say it is, especially end of season 1 to the end of season 2)
[ugh time war]
for a crew made of plastic and hollywood, modern sparklies, shiny sets, and a true-to-form imagining of pre-kirk star trek
-- episode: the andorian incident, dear doctor, carbon creek, dead stop

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firefly (obviously)
-- only 14 eps, extremely immersive, starts up quick

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Battle Star Galactica (all along the watch towers!)
-- one of the most intense and interesting first episodes in a series i've ever seen

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking for a new good show to watch. Listed above are some I havent seen yet or suggest a good one. As far as my taste my favorites are your standard The Wire/Sopranos/Breaking Bad/Boardwalk Empire/Game of Thrones type of stuff.
i rank Deadwood right up behind the wire and the sopranos, and i generally am not a fan of the setting, but deadwood ascends above it's genre imo, and HBO did not fail to deliver. show was cut short (and u feel it in season 3) because the stupid ass creator (David Milch) abandoned the show to work on his failure of a dream show called "John from Cincinnati".

also, it wasnt on your list, but check out "Vikings"

Sons of Anarchy is a few seasons deep and may be a pita to catch up on, but its a another show i watch weekly.

and if you havent seen Archer, stop what you're doing and watch it right now

Walking dead is loosing me quickly from this latest season, nothing of interest is happening, pure garbage atm.

I hope it picks back up cuz it sucks now.
