When I was in college I would say "shithole" countries sometimes and everyone laughed. Some would be a little uncomfortable but most would reluctantly nod along when you ask "well, would you want to live there?"

But I was socialist -- so I get away with that. Trump got reamed pretty hard for it.

Ethiopa is a shithole, probably because they have no natural resources to speak of. Except for undervalued ones like biological diversity. That and its in Africa -- which means your surrounded by hostile war-torn areas.

The economy is actually growing faster than many other countries ATM. I'm guess that's because of the lack of the "natural resource" curse. While lack of resources makes your development delayed -- it also makes it so the ruling elite have to actually develop an economy outside of natural resource extraction. So at first, they starve while Nigeria doesn't. But after awhile, they pull ahead of natural resource-rich Nigeria because all Nigerian rulers do is extract the resources and pay off the military.

Well parts of Africa now belong to China, so I suppose it's "punching up" to make fun of them now?

And Ukraine isn't part of the EU or Russia, so they're not part of any global superpower.
