Spain is far more Catholic that England was; England decoupled head of church from Rome in the mid 1500s when one Regal Boi decided his Queen's womb was broken and he needed a new Wife with which to create a male heir.

Obviously the church establishment was pretty turbulent for a century or so while subsequent heads of state (not using the phrase Monarchs, as obviously England went through a brief phase as a religious protectorate so it was more that just Kings/Queens making the shots) ironed out the creases.

After the English Civil War there was The Act of Tolerant which placed the Church of England as a moderate church standing between Catholicism and Protestantism, thereby allowed non state sanctioned churches greater freedoms.

Of course by this point many extreme Protestants, who were insistent on trying to force their regressive Dogma on others had already emigrated to set up their own hyper religious conclaves in the new world.

Without England's power vacuum the new world would have been even more thoroughly filled with Spanish colonials and rife with even more ... Catholic Problems. Or even worse, Quebec and New Orleans would have fromed a new superstate from Florida up to the tundra! Scare Bleue!

Natives would not have been left to live in peace.
