In terms of preferred outcomes for a thinking mind living in a world of other, similar thinking minds, morality is quite rational.

In a completely physical sense, the universe is indeed indifferent. Physics doesn't care whether you live or die or prosper or suffer. But that doesn't make being indifferent about stuff "right". Especially if there are any particular future outcomes you'd prefer to see come to pass.

Besides, rationality is basically just counting things. Irrationality is only counting some things and not others whether on purpose or by mistake. Rationalization is making up excuses why you only count some things and ignore others. Morality can be counted.

There can be no morality without divine authority, it's just the words of the current men in power that have no other legal backing.
