There is actually a very strong argument to be made for the idea that many (most?) people lack the tools to perform well in modern society as dwarfdude pointed out. The solution on the right is to allow those individuals to fail and suffer the indifference of reality. The solution on the left is to make performance compulsory under penalty of death. The intermediate state on the left is routed through social libertarianism with social welfare underwriting by the state and foreign investment subsidizing struggling individuals. Works fine until the external resource pool becomes exhausted or otherwise inaccessible.
imagine a stupid person having sympathy for stupid people. that's stupid.

There's no real argument to made against a Sweden-like state. So that's why we get these stawman arguments against Hillary Clinton (Throndor/Dino) or stupid arguments that the country is just great (Melon/Dwarflord) and trying to change anything will make it worse.

None of these people are elites and defend a system built to maximize elite profit and leisure at the cost of the lower orders.

Costs are too high, pay is too low, and its not god damn question of personal responsibility or identity politics.

Nah, people should be sympathetic to one another. That's part of being human. Embracing desteuctive ideas as evidence of one's sympathetic nature is not virtuous though. Refusing to acknowledge reality only places one at a disadvantage.

Sympathy isn't some ellusive trait guarded by only the most pious of men. It's in fairly large supply. Sure there are those without it, but they are disadvantaged and less for it.

That's not my argument. Never has been and you know it (or you don't read my posts which is also possible). My argument is that subsidizing failure in the near term without a long term solution to curbing it is dangerous. Assistance, excuse and isolation do not foster growth or strength. Direction, necessity and adversity do.
