It's been over 10 years since I got mine, but it was a pretty easy test.

Pick up a cheap PIX off of eBay, and configure it as your router at home.

The practice of setting up the interfaces, nat'ing, and acls will be a huge benefit when you test.

Nothing will help you learn faster than doing it in a live environment that you use daily.

Conceptually I agree with you, but the PIX/ASA line has a different programming language than the rest of the Cisco line so I wouldn't recommend them for training purposes. They also are a firewall not a router, so they can't...route. You'll need to know the basics of EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, etc and a PIX won't help you there. You usually need to upgrade the memory even in the 515Es and better to run anything even close to current IOS wise, and they made a lot of big changes going from 8.3 to 8.4.

If you want to practice just download GNS3 for free. It won't help you with the layer 2 stuff but that shit is pretty mild on the CCNA.

Wrong again. CCNA has labs in it. CCNP has an entire test that is nothing but labs (CCNA troubleshooting). You can also get several other different kinds of questions that aren't "1 sentence questions with short answers" like drag and drop matching and multiple correct answers.

This is wrong. The test has a lab, simlet, and testlets. The only thing you won't find is what this troll is talking about.

Download some ios images, and lab up something in gns3. If you live in Minneapolis send me a pm about getting gear.

My company is going to Juniper. JNCIA is probably the easiest cert to get. No simulations like CCNA test.
