I live in this town, but I was on the side that it missed. My cousin was not so lucky, but at least his family is alright.

nope. he was reacting to his fucked up house. "shit" has become a catch all word like "fuck," so him saying shit all the time is indicative of him recognizing the situation as being "shitty." After the tornado passes he immediately states that they need to get out of the house because it's not safe.
