Question Caster melee skills only raising 3 pts per level

Hey there

I am currently playing a human wizard, level 10, levelling her without casting - only using melee skills (yeah, I wanted to try something different).
It seems as if my melee skills only can be raised by 3 skill points per level (at level 10 I stay at a skill of 33 in 1hb, 2hb, piercing and hand-to-hand and can not raise these skills at the trainer any further.
I always thought that any skills can be raised by 5 points per level.
Don‘t think this is classic. Seems like a bug to me.

Cheers,

Do you also cut yourself to see if you still feel?

This is the most hardcore way to play EQ I've ever heard... /slowclap

Formula is indeed classic per above link (3 + Level * 3). Often you will see combat skill increase formulas vary across classes.

Interesting to note there is a comment that the skill cap is not 110 as posted (wiki mentions that as well). There is claim of a 119 1hb skill cap on a High Elf wizard in May of 2001. That may help you a bunch as you level in this unconventional way (/tips fedora)

Further research needed into these caps...

EDIT: Quick addition:

Wizard skill caps

Quote:
Castersrealm is not correct on all the Wizard skill caps. They say
defense is 3+3*level, which is 114 for a level 37 Wizard, but my level
37 Wizard has a defense skill of 119.

--Tim Smith
2nd mention of 119, this time for level 37. Perhaps it should be 8 + (Level * 3)? Only thing I can think of that makes sense given the base formula.

EDIT #2: Found an alternate claim to formula being 3 * (Level + 1), which would be 114 for level 37, but maybe it is (3 * (Level +1)) + 5? I will go deeper.

I mean a Wiz/War hybrid would have been pretty baller... stun and root like a pally, DD and snare like a ranger, and some utility spells to boot.

Some nerds are enjoying that in parallel universe right now

I have gone the combat route with my enchanter, magician, necromancer, and wizard and they all seem to have similar formulas for their combat skills. Since three of the four are only level twenty, I do not have their final and upper limit number. Many of the formulas I created for myself are based upon the Wiki upper limits being correct.

1 Hand Blunt, 2 Hand Blunt, and Piercing = ((level*3)+3) and should max out at level 36 if the upper limit is 110 (level 36 will only be two skill points).

Hand to Hand = ((level*3)+3) and should max out at level 24 if the upper limit is 75.

Offense = (level*4) and should max out at level level 35 if the upper limit is 140.

Defense is the oddity. When I first decided to keep a running Excel spreadsheet on my characters' stats, three out of four of my cloth casters were into their early teens and were only gaining three points per level. Yet I remembered, and currently checking with my magician in the single levels, that defense appears to be (level*5). I will (eventually) confirm, but from an Excel formula -

Defense =IF(level<10,(level*5),IF(level<44,(((level-10)*3)+45),145))

I was not able to confirm level 01 or 02 maxed at a defense of 05 or 10 (experience gains are too great with skill increases too few) but level 03 and 04 did max out at 15 and 20 upper limit each. I will have to see if level 10 offers no skills before beginning its (level*3) route at level 11 once I gain a few more levels on my magician.

I am assuming Dodge = (level*3) and should max out at level 25 if the upper limit is 75.

I'm continuing to try and research what is the correct INT caster caps and formula for offensive vs defensive skills.

I found a pretty accurate post of a wizard listing their defensive skill ups per level so i can validate that formula, but still seeing if i can find a smoking gun to higher weapon caps.
