Mage epics were nowhere NEAR as rare on live. Ffs, they were, like, mandatory, class-defining items.

When epics were introduced the earth staff was a rare drop off Inny and only Inny. After awhile Magi P'Tasa started dropping it. When this happened there would be 2-3 groups in hate killing mobs. Male rev's were place holders.
