Default Question about servers

I have been playing on blue for a bit. Have a few chars pushing 20. Then I keep seeing people talking about blue being the beta server? Did I start playing on the wrong server I wonder? Could someone explain like I’m 5 what the actual differences are? I couldn’t find an actual list on the wiki or post explaining this when choosing a server. Only thing I noticed is you can’t use a Ui on green and it has stricter rules.

Thank you
Nabbs

Blue is finished. It's 10+ years into its existence and has a steady, established player base. Green is newer and is currently in Kunark with patches released in a mostly classic timeline based on when they occured on live.

The goal of this entire place is to re-create EverQuest, as closely as possible to how it was in 1999-2001.

To achieve that goal, the staff here started with a "stock" EQ Emulator server ... which was based on a much later version of EverQuest. They then set to work on trying to make all the "unclassic bits" of that server classic ... but this was a massive undertaking, and there was no way they could find all those bits, test that the classic versions worked properly, and do all the relevant coding, by themselves.

So, what they did was build a server (Blue) that would let everyone "beta test" their work as they went ... while also giving people a way to experience "close to classic" EQ while they worked. This went on for about a decade, with Blue getting closer and closer to classic (in all three "eras" of vanilla/Kunark/Velious).

Once all that work was done, they finally unveiled their masterpiece: the Green server. Unlike Blue, Green was (almost) completely classic from the start, so there were no "side effects". For instance, on Blue there were various "plat duping" bugs, items dropping from the wrong mob bugs, etc., which resulted in the Blue economy being very unclassic. Green had none (ok, far far less) of these issues.

Thus, if you want the true classic experience, Green will be much closer than "Beta Blue". But again, Blue (and Red) were all we had for over a decade, so many players have several characters they love on that server. Also, Blue currently is the only server with Velious, and hopefully (someday) Blue will also get custom content, created by the P99 devs (after they finish all their classic coding).

Blue is currently at the terminus of the timeline of project 1999. It is like time traveling 1 year into the future of Green as far as playable content and stuff.

The only reason to play green would be to be part of the first people (on that server) to explore Velious, but it will be highly contested and probably really anxiety ridden versus just playing velious on blue.

So you can't really go wrong with blue. The original plan was to merge green with blue in the end anyways, and I suspect that will still take place since it doesn't make sense to have two parallel velious locked servers.

But who knows.

Calling Blue the "beta server" is just a way to belittle and and troll those who play there. The servers differ (Blue is 10 years old and at the end of the P99 timeline; Green is 1 year old and around halfway through the timeline), but there's no objective reason one is better than the other. You should play on the one that is more enticing to you.

I have a 55 wizard on Blue and a 55 warrior, 51 bard, and 51 druid on Green. Both are fun and full of awesome people to play with. Lots of fun to be had either way.

That’s what I was thinking as well. Having fun on blue and being able to use a custom ui that I can read is really nice

That is not just a troll thing: even the staff themselves have called Blue the beta server. Why? Because ... it 100% was the beta server.

Since day one Blue was meant to be "where the devs got the kinks worked out" for their true goal: a server that would be classic from day one (ie. Green). But of course, those "kinks" had lasting side effects, and so (as much as I and many others love it) Blue will never be "as classic" as Green. That's not a slight against Blue or it's players, it's just a historical fact.

Nilbog's original post announcing Blue more than ten years ago even included the following at the end (emphasis added):

P.S. I encourage everyone who hasn't already to follow that link, and read the original post announcing the start of P99. It's really quite fun to see how things started, and how far they've come since ... plus it has little Nilbog gems like:
