Today, we all do. Most scientific research is funded by government grants (e.g., from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, etc.), companies doing research and development, and non-profit foundations (e.g., the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, etc.).

For over 100 years, the U.S. has invested in basic scientific research for a number of reasons including defense, technology development, and health. For example, the 2021 budget for the NIH is $43 billion which is allotted across a wide variety of disease areas including cancer, metabolic diseases and infectious diseases – including vaccines.

The best thing about our system is that we're still too stupid to understand how it really works.

It's like the old days when the vatican told the illiterate folks what the bible said and were able to control the world until the printing press was invented.

I thought the internet would open our eyes to the complex web of lies the goverment creates to maintain control of as much as it can, but instead we just became even more illiterate.

Or maybe these are just growing pains.

Yeah, you linked an article saying exactly what I just said. This article starts out by talking about research in general. If you keep reading, it says medical research is funded mostly by private companies.

So general scientific research is certainly done at Universities through grants, but actually creating a medical product to use is done by pharmaceutical companies.
