I'm confused by the notion of a British "veteran".
People did tours in Afghanistan and Iraq (Bosnia before that), the military spits soldiers out and leaves without much practical support. Some young lads sign up at 17 not being academically gifted but they can run/strip a rifle down/etc. They dodge bullets for $60 USD/day with shit equipment and see things that aren't normal.

They go in wanting to do 22 years and come out at 40ish with a full Army pension that'll really help when they retire but not many get that far, some get medically discharged and end up homeless, have mental problems and have no skills the civilian world can really use.

I had a friend who served the minimum 4 years and ended up with a low level vocational certificate in customer service that was next to useless. I laughed when he told me. Like what did you learn to say "have a nice day" when you fired on the taliban? [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] lmao

Between 1954 and 2000, the share of veterans receiving disability compensation was very stable, fluctuating between 8 percent and 10 percent.

Today, nearly 30 percent of the country’s 18.5 million veterans receive it.

I am the secret Santa for my step-nephew who has Down syndrome (but is generally a cheerful dude)

He does, similar to a little kid, often demand that we all watch what he’s doing or wants to do though. I told my Ma I am going to get him this for his gift, and tell him now the family will pay much better attention to all his demands
