Necro pet lifetap graphics aren't right
Currently I believe all necromancer pets have the same lifetap graphic, the vanilla level 1 Lifetap spell graphic effect.
This was only true for the 44th level pet, Cackling Bones. The 49th and above Necro pets should have a spinning skull lifetap proc exactly like in this video with the spectre: https://youtu.be/pMiyJR_iTvY?t=49

Hardly classic unfortunately (I'm still trying to find a classic source), but you can see what I mean in this video. As his pet attacks Trak it procs the skulls lifetap, as all 49+ pets did.

I have found if you use only the spells.eff and temporarily remove the spellsnew files, the effects have not changed since classic. Do you research that way to see if it is how you remembered.

It looks like more than a graphic change may be needed. The only lifetap spell I could find in classic with that graphic was the Spectre Lifetap. That's a a 30% increase in hp drained, i'd like to find more evidence. You wouldn't have been able to test this since the spell assigned to the pet may be wrong.
It is mentioned in the comment below: http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/s...04540789045975

This thread from 2004 has people saying the SpectreLifetap spell might be the right one.

Same post also notes that the 49 -> 59 pets all had the same strength lifetap (though his numbers are surely off).

I've got a definitive source on this now. From Invoke Death spell description on the old CastersRealm site, 49th pet:
