Game Mechanics: Can read scrolls without trained language

Was doing the gem inlaid gauntlets quest today, and noticed that I could read the Tanned Split Paw Skin scrolls, even though I have no proficiency in gnoll. According to old quest descriptions, this should appear as gibberish:

Good find! More sources would be good.... do we know if this language barrier is Classic or later?

Found this note from May 2001:

"...You can also identify which one(s) you have by reading it. Even if you cannot read gnoll, there's a number in the text that doesn't get turned into gibberish..."

Yeah, that comment on the scroll is nice, backs up what the quest description was saying. Might be tough to find a screenshot of the scrolls though.

As a side note they did also look weird when opened. I don't remember scrolls looking like that when read, but maybe that's a side effect of the titanium UI.
